TV Bank Corporation
TV Bank Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Masayoshi Son, hereinafter "TV Bank"), a member of SOFTBANK Group, announced that it has developed "gridvod (tentative name) (beta version)", a P2P (Peer to Peer) technology-based streaming type VOD (Video On Demand) distribution system. Starting from today, TV Bank distributes about 50 titles of high-quality (1.5Mbps, partially 1Mbps) content such as animation, idol video, drama, etc. free of charge utilizing this system at TV Bank’s trial site (http://lab.tv-bank.com/gridtrial/). Also, TV Bank will distribute all fights of "Dynamite!! USA", the largest fighting sport event held in Los Angeles, USA on June 2, 2007 (local time), from June 5, 2007 (from 0:00 am, JST) free of charge.
"gridvod (beta version)" is a P2P technology-based streaming type VOD distribution system. Video content will be transmitted from a central server after it has been encrypted and fragmented. When each user views the video content, the encrypted and fragmented data will be stored in the cache of the users’ hard disk, and will be forwarded between users’ PCs according to the control of the central server. With this, "gridvod (beta version)" enables multiple people to view high-quality video content at their convenience and at the same time it disperses the load on the network.
TV Bank has already commercialized "BBbroadcast", a mass video distribution system which is also P2P technology-based. Live distribution of various video contents is already in service via "Yahoo! Streaming", the video content portal owned by Yahoo Japan Corporation. It has a record of maximum 49,000 concurrent viewers and 120,000 people as total viewers, for past events. This "gridvod (beta version)" is developed as a VOD version of "BBbroadcast", and viewers can enjoy video content anytime at their convenience.
TV Bank will work on improvement of "gridvod (beta version)" through various content distributions.
